Heat Protection/Safety
If you are working outdoors, by law, your employer must guarantee you all of the following: • access to fresh, cool drinking water throughout the day. • access to shade (all employees) or an equally cool spot (if you are not an agricultural worker) for 5 minutes at a time to rest and cool down. • training on how to work safely in the heat, including how to call for emergency services if someone is over come by the heat.

Retaliation
Retaliation occurs when your employer punishes you for exercising your labor rights. Retaliation is illegal. As a worker in California, you are protected against retaliation, regardless of your immigration status.

Paid Sick Leave
If you are denied leave, you can file a wage claim with the Labor Commissioner’s Office. More paid sick leave for workers starting January 2024. Workers can earn 40 hours or 5 days (whichever is more) of paid sick leave per year.
Worker’s Compensation
You may be eligible for workers’ compensation, which pays for medical treatment and partial wages while you recover if you think you caught COVID-19 at work.
